Divorce Can Affect More Than You Expect — Without Clear Guidance

When you’re already stretched thin, divorce decisions can feel overwhelming.

You may worry about protecting your finances, your kids, and your future — and whether you’ll be okay on the other side.

It’s natural to wonder, “Do I have what it takes to get through this without losing what matters most?”

You do. And having the right guidance can make a meaningful difference in how your divorce unfolds — financially, legally, and emotionally.

What’s Commonly at Risk in Divorce:

01

Being forced to leave a home you rely on.

03

Unclear parenting schedules or decision-making.

05

Dividing retirement savings and long-term assets.

02

Ongoing stress about monthly bills.

04

Unfair child or spousal support outcomes.

06

Responsibility for debts you didn’t create.

01

Being forced out of your home — or stuck with one you can’t afford.

02

Getting too little (or paying too much) in child or spousal support.

03

Struggling to cover bills each month or save for the future.

04

Losing your fair share of retirement savings.

05

Having no real say in your children’s schedule, care, or activities.

06

Being blamed for things you didn’t cause like bad debt.

Latrice Knighton, Esq., divorce attorney at Valor Divorce Firm, Wake Forest NC

Meet the Founder:
Latrice Knighton, Esq.

Valor Divorce Firm began long before it had a name; it began with my own divorce.

I know what it feels like to face hidden debt, mounting bills, and the fear of losing everything you’ve built. When I couldn’t afford a lawyer, I did the only thing I could: I went to the law library, studied the rules, and represented myself from start to finish.

That experience changed everything.

I became a divorce attorney to change how people experience this process — to make it simpler, fairer, and less intimidating.

For over 15 years, I’ve helped more than 1,000 people protect their children, their finances, and their peace of mind. I’ve worked in large firms and seen firsthand how traditional models can drain families emotionally and financially. That’s why I created Valor Divorce Firm: a modern practice built on clarity, compassion, and strategy.

Our mission is simple:

We support women who feel stuck in marriages with no peace and want a clear path forward.

We provide steady legal guidance and practical planning to protect what matters most.

We help women leave their marriage stronger — and return to peace, financially, emotionally, and legally.

Every divorce situation is different. You decide how much help you need. From limited advice to mediation to full legal representation, we meet you where you are. We then help you move forward with a clear plan. You’ll feel confident, leave stronger, and move toward peace.

At Valor Divorce Firm, we help people where they are — not push them into something they don’t want.

Frequently Asked Questions About Divorce Law

North Carolina requires spouses to live separately for one year before an absolute divorce can be finalized. That means the first step is understanding your timeline and legal rights before you separate. Schedule a consultation with a licensed NC divorce attorney to protect your finances and parenting rights from day one — before you make any decisions that could affect your case.

Costs in NC vary widely depending on whether your divorce is contested, uncontested, or handled through mediation. At Valor Divorce Firm, we offer flat-fee representation so you always know what you’ll pay upfront — no surprise billing. During your free consultation, we’ll explain your options and give you a clear estimate based on your specific situation.

In NC, each spouse typically pays their own attorney fees. However, under North Carolina General Statute § 50-16.4, a judge can order one spouse to pay the other’s fees if there is a significant financial imbalance. Our attorneys can help you determine whether fee-shifting may apply in your case.

North Carolina has a mandatory one-year separation requirement before you can file for absolute divorce. After filing, an uncontested divorce can finalize in as little as 30–45 days. A contested divorce involving custody disputes or complex assets can take 12–24 months or longer. We’ll help you set a realistic timeline at your first consultation.

In an uncontested NC divorce, both spouses agree on all major issues — custody, property, and support. This is faster and less expensive, and we offer flat-fee services for this path. A contested divorce means at least one issue must be resolved by a judge. Valor Divorce Firm handles both, and we’ll help you assess which path is realistic given your circumstances.

Not always. Many NC divorces are resolved through negotiation or mediation without a courtroom hearing. North Carolina courts actually require mediation for custody disputes before scheduling a trial. If your case can be settled outside of court, we’ll tell you — and if litigation becomes necessary, we’ll be fully prepared to represent you.

North Carolina is an equitable distribution state, which means marital property is divided fairly — but not necessarily equally. Courts consider factors like each spouse’s income, contributions to the marriage, and the length of the marriage. Separate property (owned before marriage or inherited) is generally not subject to division. We’ll walk you through how NC law applies to your specific assets.

Yes. Under NC law, custody and support orders can be modified if there has been a substantial change in circumstances — such as a job loss, relocation, or change in a child’s needs. The process requires filing a motion in the county where the original order was entered. Our attorneys can guide you through the modification process and help you understand what qualifies as a substantial change.
